There are lots of problems and bumps in the road that can occur when you are trying to teach your child to read. This is really a normal part of the process, and all children learn at their own pace. But if you are particularly concerned that your child might be reading at far too slow a pace for their age, then it is something you might want to look into. As it happens, there are a number of possible reasons why this might be the case, and it is good to know which is applicable in your child’s instance.

They Are Trying Something New

In many cases, a child might be reading slowly for the simple fact that they are in the process of trying out a number of different reading strategies. We all did this when young, and it is a natural part of the process of learning to read – but from the outside and as a worrying parent it can often look as though there is something wrong. Generally, this results in a better reading ability, so it is not always something to worry about if this is the reason your child is reading slowly.

They Have An Active Imagination

Some children will naturally read more slowly because they have active imaginations and they want to try and imagine and understand everything that is happening as much as possible. They might actually be pausing every sentence in order to really picture the scene. In many ways, this is a good thing, and it might not mean that you have to do anything in particular. In fact, a good imagination can be very useful when learning to read.

They Feel Anxious

Every now and then, there might be a child who feels a little anxious about reading, and that can be something that means that they are going to struggle to enjoy it. That will mean that they are naturally going to read more slowly, and that is something that you might want to look out for. Whatever the underlying cause of the anxiety, it’s something that you will be able to look into and hopefully sort out for them, but you do need to make sure that you pinpoint it as this first.

They Have Trouble With Language Skills

Some children naturally have more trouble than others with language skills, and this can obviously be the kind of thing that is really going to affect their ability to read well. This could, for example, be a case of dyslexia or a related issue. If you feel that this is happening with your child, then you will need to make sure you are supporting them as best as you can, and you might also want to find a tutor to help them along if you feel that would be helpful too. As long as you are supporting them, they should be fine.

As you can see, there are numerous reasons why your child might be reading slowly, and there is always a solution.
